One of the hundreds of things that make being a children’s book writer the best job in the world is when I get to give out prizes.
Earlier this year PDSA, the UKs leading veterinary charity, asked if I’d like to be part of their 2015 Writing Competition – Pet
Tales.
‘Yes please.’
‘Could you write the opening of an animal story for the children to continue?’
‘Yes I could’
The competition, which was open to all children under 16, had hundreds of entries and the judges were amazed at how many very very talented writers there are out there.
The winner was Francesca. Her story was called ‘On the Run’ and we all loved it.
On the 3rd of August I got to meet Francesca (sometimes known as Frankie – depending on how she’s feeling that day) at Brighton Pet Hospital. Frankie has 2 dogs of her own called Eddie and Roxy – both impish Border Terriers. I love Border Terriers and one is the star of my next book ‘Echo Come Home’.
Frankie’s prize was made up of signed copies of my books, a kindle, a beautiful trophy and a ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour of the hospital. The tour was amazing, thank you to PDSA vet nurses, Helen and Judith. I learnt so much! Thanks also to Frankie’s dad for taking these great photos.
If you entered the competition and didn’t win – don’t give up. Enter again next year! Like I said the competition was stiff and the talent ENORMOUS!!!
